Step by step

Instructions

  1. Lie face-up with your knees bent, feet flat about hip-width apart, and fingertips resting lightly beside your head.
  2. Brace your core, keep your pelvis steady, and maintain a small space between your chin and chest.
  3. Curl your head, shoulders, and upper back off the floor while rotating one shoulder toward the opposite knee.
  4. Pause briefly at the top and squeeze the obliques without pulling your head forward or allowing your hips to twist.
  5. Lower your upper body slowly to the mat, then repeat the controlled curling motion toward the other side.

Muscle focus

Muscles

Primary: Obliques

  • Rectus Abdominis
  • Transverse Abdominis
  • Hip Flexors

Coaching

Tips

  • Initiate the rotation through your rib cage rather than driving the elbow across the body.
  • Exhale as you curl and rotate, then inhale as you return to the floor.
  • Keep both feet grounded and your pelvis stable so the obliques control the movement.
  • Use a comfortable range of rotation and keep your neck relaxed throughout every repetition.

Technique check

Common mistakes

  • Pulling on the head or neck with the hands.
  • Swinging the elbow across the body without rotating the torso under control.
  • Allowing the feet or hips to shift during the repetition.
  • Using momentum instead of slowly contracting the obliques.
  • Lifting into a full sit-up and losing focused abdominal tension.
