Step by step

Instructions

  1. Grasp a secure pull-up bar with a shoulder-width underhand grip, palms facing you, and hang with your arms extended.
  2. Brace your core and glutes, keep your legs still, and engage your shoulders by drawing them gently down away from your ears.
  3. Pull your shoulder blades down and back, then bend your elbows close to your torso as you lift your chest toward the bar.
  4. Continue upward until your chin clears the bar without reaching with your neck, and pause briefly under control.
  5. Lower slowly until your arms are extended and your shoulders remain engaged, then reset before the next repetition.

Coaching

Tips

  • Use a grip only as wide as you can comfortably control, typically about shoulder width.
  • Lead with your chest and drive your elbows down toward your sides to engage your back effectively.
  • Keep your ribs, pelvis, and legs controlled to prevent swinging or excessive lower-back arching.
  • Use assistance from a resistance band or machine if you cannot complete the full range with strict form.

Technique check

Common mistakes

  • Swinging or kipping to generate momentum.
  • Using an excessively wide or uncomfortable underhand grip.
  • Craning the neck to force the chin over the bar.
  • Allowing the shoulders to shrug toward the ears throughout the pull.
  • Dropping quickly from the top instead of controlling the lowering phase.
